At twilight in an old forest, a faint emerald glow edges out of the dark: the ghostly lantern of a mushroom. It’s the centuries-old phenomenon called foxfire or fairy fire, a dim, bluish-green light emanating from the mycelial fungi feeding on rotten wood.[1]
Naturalists trace human fascination with foxfire back to antiquity. Aristotle himself wrote of a “cold fire” in the woods (a glowing rot on olive trees), and Pliny the Elder noted ethereal lamps gleaming in decaying wood.[2] Across the Northern Hemisphere, indigenous storytellers and early scientists alike marveled at these forest flames.

In the 16th century, Swedish scholars recorded how Scandinavian villagers gathered wood infested with Panellus and Mycena molds (then called “foxfire” or “faerie fire”) to light their long winter nights.[3] A 17th-century Dutch physician, Georg Eberhard Rumphius, observed that islanders in Indonesia used glowing mushrooms as improvised torches.[4] As recently as the 20th century, Micronesian warlords wove bioluminescent fungi into headdresses and face paint for ritual combat.[5]
The Chemistry of Cold Fire
In its purest form, foxfire is simply a chemistry trick: fungal luciferin reacting with oxygen (via a luciferase enzyme) to emit light.[1] This biochemistry is ancient; the enzymes that split luciferin into photons appear in dozens of mushroom lineages.[6][7]
Yet the glow is no mere curiosity. Some ecologists propose that the soft, steady radiance draws night-time insects to carry the fungi’s spores, much as flowers lure bees by day.[8][9] Experiments with the Brazilian Neonothopanus gardneri show a striking circadian rhythm: its luminescence peaks deep in the night, almost exactly ten hours after dusk, as if timed to a forest clock.
In other cases the light might simply be metabolic overflow: all known glowing fungi break down tough lignins in wood, and some researchers suggest the glow could be a by-product of those chemical reactions (possibly even serving as an antioxidant shield as the fungus digests the wood).[10] For all these theories, however, the ultimate evolutionary purpose remains mysterious.
A Global Phenomenon
Foxfire appears in many guises. Nearly 80 species of mushrooms are now known to glow in the dark.[11][12]

In the American woods, the Panellus stipticus (often nicknamed “bitter oyster” or “fiery Panellus”) quietly illuminates its decaying log, visible only to eyes grown used to the dark.[13] In Europe, the vivid orange jack-o’-lantern mushroom (Omphalotus olearius) casts its lamp-like sheen on stumps and moss. In Japan, the aptly named Mycena chlorophos and the ghostly Omphalotus nidiformis (called yagai-kirayaki) sit like clusters of green coins on fallen branches.
Deep in the Australian bush, sets of foot-long bracket fungi (Phellinus noxius, among others) can light up entire trunks in a moonlit green haze. Even the soil-teeming mycelium (the web-like “roots” of mushrooms) can glow. Researchers in Zurich found that when they split open wood colonized by Mycena crocata, the sapwood quietly radiated green light for hours.[14] Under ideal lab conditions pure cultures of mycelium can luminesce for months on end. In short, foxfire is a global phenomenon: anyone can stumble on it from Japan to Brazil, so long as they go far enough off the electricity grid and let their eyes adjust.
Folklore and Legend
Folklore and superstition have attached themselves to these phantom flames. Almost every culture that heard distant lantern-light in the woods wove a legend. In rural Appalachia they were lumped with the jack-o’-lanterns or ignis fatuus that lure unwary travelers through swamps.[15] European peasants called them will-o’-the-wisps, mischievous spirits of the swamp.
In East Asia, the tale is more specific: kitsune (the magical fox) generate kitsune-bi or “fox-fire,” glowing balls of light that dart through forests on a fox’s tail.[16] Even the word foxfire hints at that charmed animal: in Japan, the flickering of a fox’s brush through moonlit brush is kitsune no bi; in Finland the aurora borealis are literally revontulet (“fox fires”) after a myth of a snow-white fox scattering sparks with its tail.[17]

(It’s still unclear whether the English “foxfire” refers to the animal or simply derives from Old French faux “false,” meaning a fake fire.[18]) In haunted gardens and children’s books, foxfire becomes fairy gold and forest ghosts: one writer calls it “living light…turning forest floors into dreamworlds” where “the realm of fairy tales” stirs.[19]
The Scientific Record
Yet the fireflies of the deep woods also appear in sober record. Naturalists of the 18th and 19th centuries collected detailed observations. Benjamin Franklin, for instance, advised that Foxfire (though too dim for reading like an Edison bulb) could still light a compass or barometer underwater, aiding the tiny 1770s submarine Turtle.[20]
Early American and European scientists brought glowing wood to lectures and salons. By 1823 the glow from support beams in Kentucky mines was traced not to gas or electricity but to wood-drillings colonized by fungi.[21] Slowly modern chemistry took over the mystery: by the mid-20th century the molecule structures of fungal luciferin and luciferase were solved, and biologists began to peer at foxfire under controlled conditions.
Modern Discoveries
In recent years, foxfire has entered a surprising new chapter. In 2025, Swiss mycologists (working with artists) announced the discovery that a common European mushroom, Mycena crocata, will glow given the right care.[22] Zurich artists on a midnight hike noticed a green glimmer on local oak in city woods, collected some specimens, and later realized they had stumbled on a luminescent fruit.
The scientists note that in the pantheon of Mycena (bonnet) mushrooms, more glow-light may be lurking undiscovered; indeed, every time researchers look, they seem to find a new glowing species.[23] This suggests foxfire is more common than once thought, or at least, that it has simply escaped notice (the so-called “dark side” of the forest being hard to scrutinize).
In analogous biotech news, a team at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry has already tweaked fungal luciferase into tobacco plants, creating a soft-green “light bulb” plant that glows through the night (though widespread streetlamp use may become an unexpected new source of light pollution).[24]
A Deeper Meaning
What do we make of foxfire, beyond the science? For many it is a symbol of hidden beauty and resilience. The fungi that carry the torch feed on decay, literally turning death (fallen tree) into life (photons). They burn quietly without flame or heat (“cold fire” indeed), which to some is a metaphor: a light in life’s darkness.

The Appalachian Foxfire magazine, founded in 1966 to record old-time crafts and wisdom, chose its name not for the kitsch of flame-throwing foxes but to invoke that idea of old knowledge still glowing in shadow.[25] Botanists warn of “plant blindness” in modern culture (our tendency to overlook the quiet green world),[26] and foxfire literally demands we slow down and gaze: it makes the forest floor glitter with pinpricks of emerald, forcing a wandering eye downward.
“Foxfire species have presented themselves…as gems laid out against velvet night,” writes a naturalist who led people to see an ash log covered in tiny glowing mushrooms.[27] In that moment, as one moss-green world rises from another, it’s hard not to feel a little reverence.
Foxfire Today
Modern voices capture the ambivalence. Some scientists remain blunt: nothing mystic here, just biochemistry, they say. Others indulge metaphor: on moonless nights, the forest winks back. Philosopher-types might note how foxfire reveals “night’s own characteristics,” a darkness that, once full of mystery, is partly reclaimed by the very forest that spun it.[28]
Environmentalists use it as a symbol, cautioning that we’ve become “species unaware,” blinded by synthetic light, to the natural wonders around us. Still, the little mushrooms do more than symbolize: they are proof of concept. Decades before solar streetlights, Appalachians once collected foxfire in lantern jars to light porches; a southern writer notes that before electricity, people used glowing logs to outline midnight paths.[29][30]
Today, foxfire fascinates both scientists and poets. In dense woodland darkness you must first surrender to night (let your eyes dilate, let the moonrise time in your body) before you spot its subtle glow.[31] Once you do, Foxfire becomes a meditation. It is neither storm nor star but something in between: organic, gentle, flickering.
It’s a mercy perhaps, that even as my professor friend Tal Galton whispers Latin names to such fungi (proposing Minima laternis, “tiny lanterns,” for one new species), he refuses to name them after himself, preferring descriptive dignity over ego.[32] There is a humility in the fungus’s light, and in the awe it inspires: witnesses often form circles in the dark woods, spellbound at the foot of a glowing tree, stashing their phones away to stay lost in the moment.[33]
The story of foxfire is far from over. As traditional forests yield to development and light pollution, the chance to see it becomes rarer. Yet in labs and living rooms humans chase it, too: growing kits and artworks of glowing mushrooms, dreaming of bioluminescent gardens. Whether as a tool, a tale, or a testament to nature’s whim, the phenomenon endures.
After all, foxfire began not as fiction but fact, a scrap of woodland biochemistry observed by sages and scientists alike. In the end, its brightest glow may be this: a reminder that even in decay, life can invent light.
