In recent decades, dozens of documented cases have revealed people and fringe groups literally drinking blood or enacting blood rituals — not as fantasy, but as a quest for power, energy, or eternal youth. Journalistic investigations have described murderers who drank their victims’ blood, convinced they were on the brink of immortality [1], and cult members who cut one another, transfused blood, or even drank each other’s blood in the belief it conferred strength [2]. Similar incidents have appeared worldwide. In Britain in 2018, two men were convicted of harassing a vicar after believing they were vampires who drank each other’s blood [7]. In the 1990s U.S., Kentucky teen Rod Ferrell led a self-styled “Vampire Clan,” taking the moniker Vesago and murdering to prove his undead power [8]. In Ferrell’s case, courtroom testimony described a deeply troubled psyche: his mother introduced him to occult vampirism, and family dysfunction and abuse colored his delusions [9]. They also dreamt of bloodshed and harbored an affinity with the dead, often seeing themselves as ancient or immortal beings.

Not all blood rituals end in crime. Some are part of occult or subcultural rites. For example, a handful of “vampire subculture” groups practice auto-vampirism: sucking their own blood or wearing contact lenses to mimic the undead, without harming others. These enthusiasts — members of online vampire communities or LARPs (live-action role-plays) — typically insist it’s a lifestyle or aesthetic choice. One London man told the Guardian he didn’t literally believe in vampires; he simply enjoyed the escapism of a live-action vampire club, complete with fake blood and elaborate costumes [11]. Still, experts warn that even in hobbyist circles, lines can blur. There have been reports of clinics and “blood brother” events where participants voluntarily share small amounts of blood, spurred by fringe wellness claims.

Regardless of motive, these real-life cases mirror classic vampire tropes — and often end tragically. Victims’ families speak of horror and pain inflicted by killers who enjoyed inflicting violence [12]. Psychiatrists urge vigilance: anyone with chronic self-harm and violent impulses toward others should be assessed for what some term a vampire or Renfield’s syndrome. The term “Renfield’s syndrome” (after the blood-drinking character in Dracula) was coined in the early 1990s to describe compulsive vampiric behavior [13]. Robert Kaplan, a Harvard psychiatrist, notes that sufferers often progress through stages — from cutting themselves to drink their own blood, to killing animals for blood, to ultimately seeking human blood — a pattern he calls a blood-lust spiral [14].

Blood as Fountain of Youth: The Science of Parabiosis and Transfusion

The lure of blood transcends crime; it also fascinates scientists and tech moguls chasing youth. In recent years, heterochronic parabiosis and young-plasma transfusions have been touted (and in small studies, shown) to rejuvenate old organs. Parabiosis — the surgical joining of circulatory systems of a young and old animal — has a century-long history: as early as the 1860s it was used to study transplants, and today mouse experiments regularly show that an old mouse attached to a young one gains better protection against fatal diseases and lifespan extension, while the young mouse ages prematurely [20]. A 2024 review in npj Aging reports that almost all tissue types in mice respond to these youthful blood factors. Exposing an old mouse to young blood reverses epigenetic markers, transcriptomic profiles and proteomic features associated with aging, improving cognition, muscle strength, heart and liver function and more [21]. Conversely, young animals into old blood fare worse. Researchers note the effects may be mediated by blood-borne hormones, enzymes, RNAs and even mitochondria [22].

If young blood is so powerful in mice, could it slow human aging? This idea has concrete manifestations. In 2017–2019, a biotech clinic called Ambrosia (San Francisco) began offering “young plasma” infusions: 4–6 liters of donated plasma from 16–25 year olds, infused into older clients for $8,000 per treatment. The company’s founder claimed patients saw improvements in blood biomarkers for Alzheimer’s and better sleep [23]. Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel reportedly tried similar transfusions, allegedly paying $40,000 per quarter to receive plasma from 18-year-olds [24].

However, the science is far from settled. The first controlled studies gave mixed results. The landmark 2014 Harvard study that reignited interest found that injecting old mice with young plasma did improve memory and learning, while reverse transfusions degraded the young mice’s cognition [25]. But later experiments showed the effects are subtle: for instance, Berkeley researchers found that simply exchanging plasma (not full parabiosis) gave far weaker benefits to old mice than full surgical pairing [26]. In humans, small early trials have prioritized safety. One 2019 JAMA Neurology trial infused Alzheimer’s patients with young fresh-frozen plasma in a double-blind crossover design. It found the infusions were safe and well-tolerated, with no serious adverse events [27]. Importantly, neither trial claimed clinical benefits — they were primarily feasibility studies. The authors concluded that larger, well-powered trials are needed to see if cognitive or physical improvements occur [28].

Meanwhile, larger translational studies indicate that young blood does measurably affect human biology. A randomized trial led by Gaudilliere et al. (2025) infused elderly surgery patients with a purified protein fraction derived from young donor plasma. The results were striking: treated patients showed a system-wide shift in immune signaling. Key inflammatory pathways (JAK–STAT, NF-κB, MAPK) were dampened in specific cell types after young-plasma treatment, compared to placebo [29]. In other words, the elderly immune response to surgical stress became measurably “younger” in its profile. The researchers hailed this as proof of principle in humans that young plasma can actively modulate aging-related inflammation [30].

This science, however, comes with caveats. The U.S. FDA has issued stern warnings: as of 2019–2024 it notes there is no approved indication for young plasma in any age-related condition [31]. The agency explicitly states they are not aware of evidence that plasma from young donors benefits aging, memory, Parkinson’s, dementia or any chronic diseases [32]. Even after early human studies, the FDA reminds the public that existing data are preliminary and infusions carry risks. In plain terms: transfusing young plasma is experimental and unproven, much like an elixir of youth.

In sum: Animal studies clearly show blood from young organisms can rejuvenate old tissue. Human data hints at immune and metabolic shifts, but so far no definitive rejuvenation therapy. Still, the very existence of biotech entrepreneurs chasing “blood-to-blood aging therapy” underlines the seductive myth that blood is life. The image of wealthy “vampires” paying for youth taps into the same folklore as Renfield’s obsession — a desire to drink vitality directly from another’s veins.

The Psychology of Clinical Vampirism

Why do some people feel compelled to consume blood? Psychiatric experts describe Renfield’s syndrome (clinical vampirism) as a rare but distinct condition involving blood fixation. It often coexists with severe personality or psychotic disorders.
