Today “werewolf syndrome” is a media magnet, but behind the buzz is a real medical anomaly: hypertrichosis, an abnormal proliferation of hair over the body[1]. It is vanishingly rare: fewer than a few dozen congenital cases have ever been recorded[2]. Yet each person with it has conjured fascination and fear. Did medieval peasants see a werewolf in the mirror, or simply a quirky human? The answers lie somewhere between myth and medicine.

Hypertrichosis is simply defined as hair growth beyond the typical distribution[1]. Only about 50 cases of the congenital “lanuginosa” type have been documented[2], and even fewer people have the generalized form. In one well-studied family, researchers found an extra segment of DNA on the X chromosome that likely activated a nearby hair-growth gene (SOX3) during development[6]. In another kindred, scientists traced the hairiness to a mutation on chromosome 17, affecting the MAP2K6 gene region[7]. Each pedigree is different, but the pattern is similar: a normally dormant hair gene gets reactivated in utero.
Because the main trigger is genetic, congenital hypertrichosis often runs in families: it’s usually X-linked dominant[7]. A father with the condition will pass it to all his daughters (and none of his sons), while an affected mother has about a 50% chance of passing it on[7]. In practice, nearly all modern cases descend from a few large Mexican, European or Middle Eastern kindreds whose genetics have been scrutinized.

Medically speaking, hypertrichosis usually comes by itself. Patients are typically healthy in every other respect. One JAMA Dermatology case series bluntly reported that aside from the hair, there were “no other abnormalities”[2]. Thus the treatment is purely cosmetic: shaving, waxing or lasering off the hair as needed. Some specialists try medications (for example, anti-androgens) to slow growth, but there’s no cure. The condition can cover the scalp, face and body (even private areas), which can be socially burdensome, but it doesn’t cause organ damage or fever. In essence, hypertrichosis is pure hair: a striking physical trait, but not a poisoning or paralysis.
Physicians also note an acquired form of hypertrichosis. This occurs due to other health issues, not birth defects. For example, certain internal cancers can trigger a diffuse lanugo-like hair growth over the face and torso[8]. Other severe illnesses, malnutrition or hormonal syndromes may produce patchy hairiness. Even some drugs, everything from anticonvulsants like phenytoin to immunosuppressants like cyclosporine, can cause extra hair as a side effect. But these acquired cases do not produce the full “wolf suit” of congenital syndrome. They are usually reversible once the illness or drug is addressed. In short, acquired hypertrichosis is a red flag for disease, not a curse.
In evolutionary terms, hypertrichosis is often cited as a classic atavism: the reappearance of an ancestral trait[9]. Early human ancestors were much hairier, so the genes for fur are still present in our DNA. When a mutation reawakens them, we see the vestige. Interestingly, hair genes often have multiple functions, so they cannot simply be deleted. As a biologist put it, most genes are like “Renaissance artists”: they multitask[10]. A gene that triggers body hair might also influence skin or bone development. This may explain why humans never shed their hair genes entirely: removing them would also disrupt other systems. Charles Darwin himself noted that traits like extra fingers or canine teeth occasionally reappear from “a long-disused function” in the body[9]. From a modern perspective, hypertrichosis is a quirky historical footnote of evolution. It shows that the “fur all over” mode is still possible. But it also confirms we don’t normally need it. Understanding hypertrichosis might someday illuminate why the rest of us remain relatively hairless. Kings, Freaks and “Wolf Children”
Even before microscopes and genealogies, people with extra hair often became living curiosities. One of the most famous cases is Petrus Gonsalvus (1537-1618)[11]. A native of the Canary Islands, Gonsalvus was presented at the court of King Henry II of France as a boy. Contemporary portraits show his cheeks, neck and torso covered in dark fur. Observers called him Homo silvestris (“man of the woods”) or even the “Canarian werewolf”[11]. Despite this, Gonsalvus lived partly as nobility. He learned European court etiquette, married a lady-in-waiting, and fathered a family. Yet the shadow of myth never fully left him: letters from the era note that some courtiers treated him as a tame beast of the king, marveling at him as a rarity[11][12]. In his own writings, Gonsalvus sometimes expressed frustration at the attention. He was, after all, just a man, but his veins held a genetic “wolf gene,” so to speak.
By the 1800s, hypertrichosis had been fully commercialized by circuses and sideshows. Barnum and his contemporaries discovered that nothing drew crowds like a “man-fish” or “lion-boy.” Stephen Bibrowski (born 1890), billed as the “Lion-Faced Man,” was a Polish man who had a thick mane extending down to his torso. Barnum exhibited him wearing a lion costume to highlight the resemblance. Another was Fedor Jeftichew, a Russian performer known as “Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy”[13]. In advertisements they were never “patients” or “sons and daughters”; they were beasts showcased onstage for coin. Bibrowski claimed to be well-read and refined off-stage; Jeftichew reportedly joined the circus to escape orphanages. These attractions treated hypertrichosis like a pet trick. In lore, they became “wolf men” or “dog boys,” feeding public hunger for the monstrous.
Of course, fame in a circus was one path, persecution was another. One of the darkest episodes involving hypertrichosis-like traits happened not under a big top, but at a village well. In 1573, Gilles Garnier, a French woodsman known locally as hairy, was accused of murdering children and eating them. Garnier swore he was innocent and blamed real wolves. The townspeople did not listen. Without any forensic evidence, he was convicted as a werewolf. They dressed him in four wolf pelts and burned him at the stake[14]. A later inquest questioned the sanity of the case; there is no indication Garnier had true hypertrichosis. He may have had a psychiatric illness. Garnier’s fate is chilling proof of how a hairy man could be mistaken for a wolf. In that era, extreme difference often invited death.
By the 20th century, medicine had begun to step in. In 1995, a team in Houston announced they’d found a candidate gene for X-linked hypertrichosis[15]. For once, newspapers shifted tone from shock to science. The New York Times described the discovery (a duplicated segment on the X chromosome) as finally giving a name to the “wolf-man” phenomenon. The researchers, careful to downplay sensationalism, talked about DNA instructions and embryonic development. But the headlines happily slotted “mutant gene” and “hairy mutation” into place. Little by little, hypertrichosis was recast from freak show material into genetic curiosity. The nineteenth-century freak now had twenty-first-century geneticists on his side.
The Gentle Wulver and the Cultural Mirror
If people with hypertrichosis were often framed as monsters or victims, at least one folklore figure gave a kinder twist on the wolf motif. According to Jessie Saxby’s 1930s account, the Shetland wulver was “a creature like a man with a wolf’s head,” completely covered in short brown fur[16]. Crucially, the wulver never harmed anyone. He sat by a lake fishing all day and was “very fond of catching and eating fish,” but he would often leave a few trout on the poor crofters’ window-sills[16]. In Saxby’s telling, he was essentially a benevolent loner, more like a grandfatherly hermit than a forest demon. If hypertrichosis sufferers in legends were typically cursed or feared, here was a “wolf-man” who was kindly and generous.
Modern scholarship, however, has exposed the wulver as a twentieth-century invention. No old Shetland manuscript mentions a wolf-man. The earliest references begin with Saxby herself[17]. Linguists have found that place-names misled her: “Wulvers Hool” or “Wool Vola” were terms for fairy mounds, not wolf caves[17]. In effect, Saxby invented the creature (perhaps misremembering local lore or playing author). Today the Shetland archives cheekily call it “a hoax” born of misinterpretation[18]. Some notes even suggest Saxby may have conflated it with a story of a person with Hunter syndrome (another genetic disease) and spun it into folklore[19]. In short, the wulver reminds us that sometimes monsters are simply stories we’ve made up.
Contrast the wulver with the classical werewolves. In most European and Near Eastern traditions, wolf-men were ominous or tragic figures. Greek and Roman mythology tells of King Lycaon, who was turned into an actual wolf by Zeus for feasting on human flesh[20]. Medieval and Renaissance lore mixed wolf-man imagery with witchcraft: for instance, a 1628 English pamphlet by Richard Verstegan described werewolves as “certain sorcerers” who rubbed themselves with a magic salve to “appear as wolves” and then kill men[21]. These stories served as morality tales about sin and transformation, not as descriptions of any known medical disorder.
Importantly, none of these myths describe true hypertrichosis. They depict humans becoming real wolves (often with tails and fur and fangs) or vice versa. By comparison, a person with hypertrichosis is simply a very hairy human. In fact, scholars note that if every werewolf in history had been an unusually hairy man, then the afflicted would have been “as common as dandelions” in the records, but they were not[22]. In essence, the actual condition was too rare to spawn a mass of tales. The werewolf myth largely sprang from human imagination and superstition, with only occasional threads (like strange hair) grafted on. Hypertrichosis adds at most a footnote to the werewolf legend, rather than serving as its plot.

Convergence of Myth and Medicine
Today, the myth of the werewolf and the reality of hypertrichosis coexist in an uneasy truce. To the skeptical eye, one is a genetic syndrome and the other a metaphor. Still, people sometimes try to link them. For example, in the 1960s Dr. Lee Illis even hypothesized that porphyria (a disease causing extreme sunlight sensitivity and dark-colored urine) might explain some werewolf stories[23]. The idea later fell out of favor. Others have pointed out superficial parallels between descriptions of werewolves and cases of profuse hair, but these are anecdotes, not proof. By and large, science treats them as separate.

Pop culture swings both ways. On one hand, sensational media love the “wolf” label. Tabloids and clickbait websites often dub a hypertrichotic child a “wolf baby” or “wolf man” to stir shock, running grainy photos with werewolf fonts. On the other hand, many news and documentary outlets now explain the biology. Nature documentaries, medical podcasts, and even children’s TV have featured real-life “wolf men,” making it clear these are just genetic conditions. For example, ABC News headlined Danny Gomez as a “Real-Life Wolf Man,”[24] but the piece itself emphasized that he was perfectly normal except for his extra hair[25]. In other words, story angles may grab attention, but the facts get told too.
The lonely fact remains: real people with hypertrichosis do not transform under a full moon. In Saxby’s wulver tale, no curse or moon was needed for kindness; the gentle wolf-man was always as he appeared. In typical werewolf legends, by contrast, the human is always helpless to dark forces. The reality is far more mundane. Experts note that if every rogue in medieval Europe had been diagnosed with hypertrichosis, the afflicted would have to have been “as common as dandelions”, but they were not[22]. Hypertrichosis itself carries no curse. The only “monster” is the mask our minds impose on a very human individual.
What if there is a deeper meaning? Folklorists say werewolf tales often encode social fears or moral lessons: they addressed sin, taboo, and the unpredictability of evil. Hypertrichosis carries no moral of its own. Its modern lesson has become one of tolerance. In fact, educators sometimes use stories of “wolf-children” to teach acceptance. When a little girl with the condition was featured in the press, many classrooms seized on it to discuss empathy. The message shifted: these children aren’t demons, they’re just different.
Media reaction itself is a barometer of change. A century ago, newspapers gawked at hypertrichotic people; today, human-interest pieces prevail. A British teenager with hypertrichosis was recently interviewed about her dream of becoming a veterinarian. The focus was on her ambitions, not any mythical curse. Online support groups and awareness campaigns now exist, encouraging understanding rather than fear. Even fantasy novels and TV shows treat “wolf people” as sympathetic characters nowadays. In short, society has largely moved from horror to humanization.
So what happens when the hair grows in the lab instead of under moonlight? The answer is empathy and education. Medical journals now describe these patients in sober, technical terms: case histories and gene sequences. Families hear about genetic tests and laser therapy, not exorcisms. One dermatologist observed that examining a hypertrichotic patient is “like meeting any other teenager with an unusual feature.” In other words, no miracles or curses, just science and compassion.
Ultimately, hypertrichosis and werewolf lore have parted ways in scholarship, even if echoes of both linger in culture. Each new real-life case is an opportunity to educate rather than to exorcise. The hidden lesson, if there is one, lies in ourselves: in how quickly we can change the narrative. Ultimately, hypertrichosis is a mirror reflecting our own journey. Werewolf folklore taught our ancestors to fear the unknown; hypertrichosis teaches us to find compassion in differences. In a final irony, the story comes full circle: in medieval tales a man was mistakenly seen as a wolf, while today a “wolf child” is often just another neighbor.
