In our hyperconnected age, sleep has become a casualty of 24/7 demands. In the United States, more than one-third of adults admit to sleeping too little[1], and tens of millions face chronic sleep disorders[2]. Meanwhile, corporate and tech culture lionizes the few who survive on five hours of rest, with CEOs and investors brandishing insomnia as a badge of honor. But at what cost?

Hippocrates, the ancient physician, identified sleep as one of the six requisites of health[3]. He even noted that “a disease in which sleep causes distress is deadly, but if sleep is beneficial, the disease is not deadly”[4]. Modern science is finally catching up with his insight: the brain and body use sleep for vital maintenance, from wiring memory to repairing cells, none of it trivial. Neglecting rest, experts warn, carries a hidden toll on mood, memory and even lifespan[5][6].



The sleeping brain is not inert. In the early 1950s, University of Chicago researchers Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman discovered that deep in the night the eyes sometimes rove under closed lids[7]. These “Rapid Eye Movements” (REM) signaled a dreaming, metabolically busy phase of sleep, as active as wakefulness in oxygen use.

In each roughly 90-minute cycle, the brain switches between this active REM phase and a deeper non-REM phase. During non-REM sleep (stages N1→N3), brain waves grow progressively slower and larger[8], with stage N3 yielding the deepest, restorative rest. Remarkably, this slow-wave stage shrinks with age: older adults spend far less time in N3 and awaken more often[9].

After about 90 minutes the cycle repeats, and a typical young adult will pass through about four or five such REM/NREM cycles each night. In short, sleep is not a single state but an ever-shifting landscape: one minute drifting toward oblivion, the next nestled in active dreaming. Harvard sleep pioneer Nathaniel Kleitman later quipped that during REM “the brain, which generates and evidently benefits from sleep, seems to be too busy to get any sleep itself”[10].

The Night Shift: Memory, Mood, and the Brain’s Maintenance Crew

Even asleep, the brain remains at work. During deep slow-wave sleep it activates the “glymphatic” waste-clearance system that mixes cerebrospinal fluid around neurons and flushes out toxic byproducts[5]. Notably, this cleaning occurs primarily during sleep; without enough deep sleep the system backs up, possibly speeding Alzheimer’s pathology. As Harvard neurologist Anthony Komaroff observes, “we also need to sleep to flush wastes from our brain”[11]. Sleep also consolidates memory: researchers believe the sleeping hippocampus repeatedly replays the day’s events, embedding them into long-term storage, and cleaning the mental slate.

Sleep loss also sharpens our mental point of view, in a bad way. A classic experiment found that volunteers curtailed to 4½ hours of sleep for a week became markedly more stressed, angry and depressed[12]. When normal sleep was resumed their mood rebounded, underscoring how acute deprivation aggravates negative emotions.

Over the long term, chronic sleep disruption can foreshadow psychiatric illness: about 15-20% of people with insomnia eventually develop major depression[13]. In a large community study, insomniacs were five times more likely to become clinically depressed[14], and twenty times more likely to develop panic disorder.

Circadian disruption is similarly pernicious. Meta-analyses find night-shift workers are about 40% more likely to become depressed than day workers[15]. Conversely, regular, bright daytime light (which solidifies the circadian rhythm) correlates with lower depression rates[16][17]. In short, mood and sleep are entwined: a bad night can mean a bad day, and vice versa.

Health Below the Neck: Body, Immunity, and Longevity

Medical science is just beginning to appreciate sleep’s reach. One thing is clear: skimping on rest is dangerous. Harvard sleep experts note that chronic short sleep (under 6 hours) raises the odds of obesity, diabetes and heart disease[18]. For example, adults sleeping only 6-7 hours showed more coronary artery calcification (a precursor of heart attack) than those sleeping 8 hours[19].

In one pooled analysis, people averaging under 7 hours were three times as likely to develop a cold when exposed to a virus[20]. In fact, sleep even bolsters immunity long-term: recent studies found that individuals who got under 6 hours around a vaccination developed drastically weaker antibody responses (about half as high) as those well-rested[21][22]. In other words, a good night’s sleep can make vaccines work better.

Physiological repair happens mostly at night. Major restorative processes (protein synthesis, tissue repair, release of growth hormone) occur almost exclusively during sleep[23]. Burning the midnight oil disrupts the hormones that regulate metabolism. Sleep deprivation shifts key hormones, reducing satiety signals and raising appetite hormones, making us hungrier and more insulin-resistant[24].

Perhaps most starkly, long-term data suggest that sleeping five hours or less per night can raise overall mortality by approximately 15%[6]. Getting enough sleep, experts now say, is as vital as eating well or exercising[18].

Current consensus holds that most adults should aim for about 7-9 hours per night[25]. Very long sleep can also signal trouble: a recent Framingham study found that sleeping 9+ hours was linked to poorer cognitive function, especially in people with depression[26][27]. Both excessive and insufficient sleep appear to impair alertness and memory.

The Clock Within: Circadian Rhythms

Our urge to sleep is set by an internal 24-hour clock: the circadian rhythm. The brain’s master clock (in the hypothalamus) synchronizes bodily functions with day and night[29]. It times fluctuations in alertness, body temperature, hormone levels and even learning efficiency.

In daylight, retinal signals keep the clock aligned. At dusk, the pineal gland produces melatonin in darkness[30], essentially turning down the lights for our mind. Melatonin levels climb in dark and fall in light, slowing the hypothalamus’s signals (cooling the body and lowering blood pressure) to prepare for sleep[31].

Remarkably, melatonin may also protect cells. It has antioxidant effects and helps safeguard the brain[32]. In fact, removal of the pineal gland has been shown to accelerate aging[33].

Each person’s clock is slightly different: some are early birds, some night owls, and these tendencies shift with age. Adolescence brings a natural delay (making teens stay up late) while seniors become earlier birds[34]. Consistency with natural light helps. In a large Harvard study of over 6,000 people, those exposed to more bright daylight kept very regular sleep schedules and reported far fewer depression symptoms[16].

By contrast, artificial light and erratic schedules do the opposite. Even moderate screen time at night suppresses melatonin and shifts the clock. Chronic circadian disruption has become a recognized health risk. The CDC bluntly equates less than 7 hours with dangerous driving: drowsy driving is “as dangerous as drunk driving”[35]. The lesson is clear: protecting our internal clock by exposing ourselves to daylight and consistent routines pays dividends for mood, cognition and cardiovascular health.

Aging and Sleep: The Years That Change the Night

Sleep needs do not diminish with age. If anything, older adults need just as much sleep as younger adults[36], but their sleep often does. After age 50 the body secretes much less melatonin, and age-related changes in sleep physiology kick in. Deep N3 slow-wave sleep fades to nearly zero in many seniors[9], leaving mostly lighter stage 1-2 sleep.

The consequences are manifold. Sleep is when the body conducts major repairs, releasing growth hormone, building proteins, bolstering immunity[23]. Losing deep sleep or shortening the night means these tasks suffer. It also means less time for glymphatic cleansing of the brain[5], which may partly explain why neurodegenerative disease risk rises in seniors with untreated insomnia or apnea.

Indeed, studies show that sleep disturbances in late middle age predict worse memory and brain health later. A 2025 Yale report found that subjects with less deep (N3) and REM sleep in midlife had significantly smaller volumes of brain regions vulnerable to Alzheimer’s a decade later[37]. In fact, investigators are now probing whether impaired glymphatic clearance during sleep might be the missing link to cognitive decline[38].

Tending the Torpid: Sleep Hygiene and Best Practices

Experts agree that most adults need around seven to nine hours a night, and that consistent habits greatly improve sleep quality. For example:

  • Keep a regular sleep schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same times each day[25][40]. This helps anchor the circadian clock.
  • Make your bedroom a sanctuary: Keep it dark, cool (about 60-67°F), and quiet[41]. Light and noise trigger wakefulness. Heavy blackout curtains and white-noise machines can help.
  • Avoid big meals, caffeine and alcohol in the evening[42]. Notably, alcohol may knock you out initially but later fragments sleep and cuts REM sleep (the crucial dream stage)[43].
  • Establish a relaxing bedtime ritual: Put away screens at least an hour before bed. Read, take a warm bath, or practice gentle stretches[44]. These activities help the mind wind down.
  • Exercise regularly during the day, but not too close to bedtime[45]. Morning or afternoon workouts promote deeper sleep, whereas late-night high-intensity workouts may keep you wired.
  • Keep naps short and early: Limit naps to 20-30 minutes and avoid late afternoon naps[46]. A brief nap can recharge you without spoiling nighttime sleep.
  • If you can’t sleep, don’t stress in bed: Get up and do something calming (read or meditate) in another room, then return only when sleepy[47][48]. This avoids building anxiety about the clock.

In short, modern sleep science favors low-tech solutions. Consistency, comfort and darkness are the fundamentals of a good night’s rest. And if insomnia persists, it may be time to consult a professional, just as you would for any chronic ailment.

Nightfall in History: Sleep Before the Electric Age

Our assumption that sleep should be one unbroken span is a modern one. Before electric lighting, many cultures practiced segmented sleep. Typically, a person would sleep a few hours after dusk, wake in the middle of the night for an hour or so, and then return to a “second sleep”[50]. Diaries and literature from the pre-industrial era refer to this midnight waking as a normal, even productive, period.

Alongside these nighttime intervals, midday napping was common in warm climates. Spain’s traditional siesta, for example, is a deliberate biphasic pattern[52][53]. Spaniards average about 7h40 of total sleep per day (including the siesta) versus roughly 6h50 for Americans, simply shifting some rest to the afternoon.

Once electric light became ubiquitous, however, our sleep consolidated into the single stretch seen today[50]. This modern monophasic norm comes at a cost: it’s achieved through intensive nighttime artificial light and often shifting work hours, pulling us away from our evolutionary design. In short, history shows that the way we sleep has varied dramatically, a reminder that today’s schedule is a cultural artifact, not a biological given.

Sleep Around the World: Culture and Chronotypes

Not everyone sleeps the same. Geography, culture and lifestyle shape sleep habits globally. In some Northern countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden), people typically average around 7 hours nightly, higher than the U.S. average. Paradoxically, these Scandinavians are among the world’s largest consumers of sleep aids: one analysis found they search online for melatonin, blackout curtains and related products far more than any other nation[54][55]. Even in midsummer’s midnight sun, they rig blackout curtains and use separate blankets to preserve darkness.

By contrast, some industrial societies operate on sleep-deprived schedules. For example, many working adults in East Asia and the Middle East commonly report under 7 hours on weekday nights (sometimes catching up on weekends). Meanwhile, cultures near the equator often embrace daytime rest.

Within any country, chronotype differences and social obligations clash. School-aged teens often accumulate “social jetlag” by waking for early classes, even as their biology resists it. Across the globe, urbanization and nightlife blur the circadian line: smartphones and LED lighting keep millions awake late. The upshot is nearly universal: sleep has become both scarce and coveted. Media now declare that “sleep is the new sex,” noting that after a decade of crises “getting a solid 40 winks is positively trendy”[56].

Counting Sheep: The Final Word

In the end, the evidence is inescapable: sleep is not optional. Across species, sleep evolved as a time for physical repair, memory consolidation and mental detox. Our century-long experiment of chronic sleep skimping looks downright reckless. Medicine now warns that “getting enough sleep is as important as eating right and exercising”[18], and that the loss of sleep shows up in everything from immune system function to brain tissue repair.

For too long we’ve bragged that sleeping eight hours is a weakness. We have glimpsed, however, what we lose by doing so: clear thinking, stable mood and even years of healthy life. If depression, Alzheimer’s and heart disease are rising, sleep neglect is likely part of the story. Perhaps the most radical act of self-care in our frenzied age is simply to close our eyes.

In fact, only a rare few (estimated 1-3% of people) carry genetics that let them truly thrive on 4-6 hours[57]. Everyone else who tries to skimp accumulates deficits that caffeine and willpower alone cannot fix. The hour we spend in bed shapes the hours we live. As public health experts remind us, drowsy driving can be “as dangerous as drunk driving” if we shirk our sleep. In short, sleep is precious[49], and today, more so than ever.
